Mérida, Yucatán – July 4, 2021. Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) visited the state of Yucatán for the first-time last week when took part of a tour of the state alongside Mexico’s Minister of Tourism, Miguel Torruco, and state of Yucatan’s Minister of Tourism Michelle Fridman. During his tour, he was able to experience some of the most emblematic attractions of the destination, highlighting the diversity, product innovation, but above all, the sustainable and biosafety practices that prevail in the destination.
The three-day visit showcased the Ministry’s proactive campaign to bring tourism back to the destination in a safe manner, an initiative that awarded the state the WTO’s Safe Stamp early in its reopening and was once again celebrated, this time by Pololikashvili who spoke of the “state of Yucatan as an example of good tourism practices and asked for the return of tourism in a safe manner during a press conference from one of the state’s UNESCO World Wonder Chichen Itza.
During the visit, the state of Yucatan made its official request to be included as a member of the WTO, which will be reviewed UNWTO General Assembly that will take place next October in Morocco.
Other locations visited during the tour, where the Mayan Villages, the Magical Towns of Maní, Izamal and Valladolid and Archaeological Zones, the Government of Yucatán, through the Yucatan’s Ministry of Tourism (Sefotur) and in coordination with the INAH and other agencies of the Mexican government, made a supervision visit in Uxmal, to learn about the new Uxmal sound and light show or videomapping that will replace the one planned since 1975.
“It is the first time that I visit Yucatan, I want to thank Secretary Michelle Fridman and Secretary Torruco for this great experience, it is a diverse destination with a great mix of experiences, in Yucatan there is culture, history, adventure and rural tourism, which is a priority for UNWTO in the next three to four years. The state of Yucatán is an example in terms of rural tourism and good practices, that is why it was congruent to come and visit, ”he assured in an interview.
UNWTO supports rural tourism for its inclusive and sustainable quality, considering it a great vehicle for economic and social recovery: “I believe that we started these first steps from Yucatan, which is a great example, so we want to take advantage of it to use it as a pilot, firstly, to initiate and reactivate tourism and secondly, to see what kind of products there are in rural tourism ”, he added.
He highlighted that Mexico is one of the pioneer countries in the growth of tourism in this sector due to the Magical Towns Program program and has historically been a leading destination.
From the archaeological zone of Chichén Itzá, a modern wonder of the world, he issued a message to the international community to reactivate travel within a framework of responsibility: “We are really very happy to see that tourists are coming to visit Chichén Itzá, we are full as you will be able to see, as an International Tourism point with the Secretary of Tourism Miguel Torruco and the Secretary of Tourism of Yucatan, my friend Michelle Fridman ”.
“We are very happy that people have already started coming to the tours, we see them moving everywhere. The shops are open. We can appreciate that summer is almost here, and we hope it will be better than last year. As well as making it known that all tourists are welcome in Mexico and in the world. I feel that it is a good start to reactivate tourism,” he continued.
He finally congratulated the Government of Yucatan, for the sustainability on which they have built the tourism development of the state, “that without a doubt is a balance between infrastructure, sustainability and development.”

- Secretario General de la Organización Mundial del Turismo, Zurab Pololikashvili hizo un llamado a recuperar el turismo y a viajar en un marco de responsabilidad desde la emblemática zona arqueológica de Chichén Itzá.
Mérida, Yucatán a 4 de Julio de 2021. Por primera vez, Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretario General de la Organización Mundial de Turismo, (OMT) visitó el estado de Yucatán. Durante su gira, el máximo representante del turismo a nivel mundial, conoció algunos de los atractivos más emblemáticos del destino, destacando la diversidad, la innovación de productos, pero sobre todo, las prácticas sostenibles y de bioseguridad que reinan en el destino.
Durante tres días en el Estado, las máximas autoridades de turismo de México y del mundo, descubrieron las grandezas y bellezas naturales, arquitectónicas, gastronómicas y culturales de Yucatán.
En una gira muy completa que incluyó Aldeas Mayas, Pueblos Mágicos y Zonas Arqueológicas, el Gobierno de Yucatán, a través de la Sefotur y en coordinación con el INAH y otras dependencias del gobierno de México, realizaron una visita de supervisión en Uxmal, para conocer el nuevo show de luz y sonido de Uxmal o videomapping que sustituirá el proyectado desde 1975.
La visita se día a cabo durante el inicia del operativo de verano 2021, la titular de Sefotur, Michelle Fridman Hirsch, fue la anfitriona representante del Gobierno del Estado para acompañar a las máximas autoridades del Turismo de México y el mundo, por algunos de los Pueblos Mágicos como: Maní, Izamal y Valladolid, así como estas comitivas pudieron maravillarse con la belleza y el misticismo de dos de las zonas arqueológicas más representativas de Yucatán, Uxmal y Chichén Itzá.
Cabe señalar que la solicitud de integración del organismo de turismo estatal, será analizada por la Asamblea General de la OMT que se llevará a cabo en octubre próximo en Marruecos.
El Secretario agradeció la hospitalidad de los anfitriones estatales y destacó el excelente trabajo que se lleva a cabo en la entidad en cuanto a la aplicación de las buenas prácticas turísticas implementadas por el Gobierno del Estado a través de la Secretaría de Fomento Turístico (Sefotur).
“Es la primera vez que visito Yucatán, quiero agradecer a la secretaria Michelle Fridman y al secretario Torruco por esta gran experiencia, es un destino diverso y con una gran mezcla de experiencias, en Yucatán hay cultura, historia, aventura y turismo rural, que es una prioridad para la OMT en los próximos tres o cuatro años. Yucatán es un ejemplo en materia de turismo rural y de buenas prácticas, por eso era congruente venir a conocerlo” aseguró en entrevista.
La OMT apoya al turismo rural por su cualidad de incluyente y sostenible, considerándolo un gran vehículo para la recuperación económica y social: “yo creo que iniciamos estos primeros pasos desde Yucatán que es un gran ejemplo, por lo que queremos aprovechar para utilizarlo como un piloto, primeramente, para iniciar y reactivar el turismo y segundo, para ver qué tipo de productos hay en turismo rural”, agregó.
Destacó que México es uno de los países pioneros en crecimiento de turismo de este sector por el programa de Programa de Pueblos Mágicos e históricamente ha sido un destino líder.
Desde la zona arqueológica de Chichén Itzá, maravilla moderna del mundo, emitió un mensaje a la comunidad internacional para reactivar los viajes en un marco de responsabilidad: “Estamos realmente muy contentos de ver que los turistas están viniendo a visitar Chichén Itzá, estamos llenos como podrán ver, como punto Internacional del Turismo con el Secretario de Turismo Miguel Torruco y la Secretaria de Turismo de Yucatán, mi amiga Michelle Fridman”.
“Estamos muy felices de que las personas ya han comenzado a venir a los tours, las vemos moviéndose por todas partes. Las tiendas están abiertas. Podemos apreciar que el verano ya está casi aquí y esperamos que sea mejor que el año pasado. Así como hacer saber que todos los turistas son bienvenidos a México y en el mundo. Siento que es un buen comienzo para reactivar el turismo”, continúo.
Finalmente felicitó al Gobierno de Yucatán, por la sustentabilidad sobre la cual han edificado el desarrollo turístico del estado, “eso sin duda es un balance entre infraestructura, sostenibilidad y desarrollo”, finalizó.
